It was two hours till dawn, but the prospect of photographing first light on Chile's spectacular Cordillera del Paine wouldn't let me sleep—so I shouldered my pack and headed out to wait and watch for sunrise. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the sky began to lighten, revealing a solid gray ceiling and the strong possibility of a photographic "dud." But, being an optimist, I decided to wait it out. There's a point, however, when optimism becomes ridiculousness and I was pretty sure I'd passed that point. So, packing up my gear, I began to head in. Just then, a golden shaft of light pierced the clouds and spotlighted the granite spires of one of God's most awesome mountain sculptures, and the chill of morning was instantly gone.
