Working my way from Yellowstone to the Tetons on a late autumn afternoon, I happened to glance in the rearview mirror while going up a hill by the north shore of Jackson Lake ... and this is what I saw. Slamming on the brakes, and grabbing a tripod and long telephoto lens in one motion, I jumped out of my truck and set up right in the middle of the road. Ten shots, the light was gone and it was over.
So what you're looking at is the meandering pattern of the upper Snake River flowing through a darkened mud flat on the receding north shore of Jackson Lake. The ribbon of light at the water's edge is post sunset illumination reflecting from a high cloud cover.
